Another Mayweather Money Fight?

Lifestyle

Floyd Mayweather, Jr, has hinted heavily that he could come out of retirement for another high-profile fight. He did the same thing last year when he fought Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) champion Conor McGregor. That was dubbed the Money Fight, due to the huge profits it generated.

How Was the New Fight Announced?

Via the boxer’s favourite platform, Instagram, of course. The boxer has become a fan of social media and uses it well, often making intriguing posts to tantalise his fans. He posted a video about the chances of him coming out of retirement for another nine-figure payday, stirring up the rumours even more.

Who is He Fighting This Time?

Manny Pacquiao, the only eight-division world champion in the history of boxing, and a current Senator in his Native Philippines.

Have They Fought Before?

Yes, in 2015 they went head to head in what was dubbed the Fight of the Century. Held in the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, it attracted the biggest boxing audience of all time, with a record-breaking 4.6 million pay-per-view purchases.

Who Won That Time?

Floyd Jr did. Pretty Boy has never lost, and he won by unanimous decision in 2015. The idea of a rematch has been touted ever since, especially because Pacquiao later revealed that he had been sparring with a torn rotator cuff.

Why Now?

Pac Man was last in the ring in July 2018, when he defeated Lucas Mathysse. After that victory, he used his interviews to call out Mayweather for another round. He also sent out a Twitter post of a video captioned “50-1”, a reference to him being the one to finally break Mayweather’s winning streak. The July 2018 win was Pacquiao’s first knockout since his TKO of Miguel Cotto in 2009, which may have been what gave him the confidence to issue the challenge.

What Were the Takings in 2015?

Pacquiao banked around $142 million; his rival took home about $220 million.

Other Details About the New Match?

At this stage, we don’t know much more about the specifics of this rematch. Mayweather didn’t include any details in his Instagram post, although some sources say he would like it to be held in December 2018.

If it is held in Vegas as 2017’s Money Fight was, lucky spectators will be able to enhance their excitement with a few casino games. And if you’re watching the broadcast at home, you can heighten the excitement by spinning the reels of some of our world-class pokies.

Would He Fight McGregor Again?

Mayweather seems to be willing to come out of retirement for any high-profile, high-paying event, so the answer from his side is almost certainly yes. As for McGregor, he has said that he would happily go against Pretty Boy again, but not in any kind of MMA-Boxing hybrid. Rumours of such a modification have been circling, but the Irishman has stated categorically that he’d only be interested in a pure Boxing or MMA event.

Is He Doing it For the Money?

He could be. Mayweather’s Instagram post referenced earning another 9-figure paycheque, although at this stage it is hard to imagine that he needs it. His 2017 clash with McGregor netted him around $275 million, and re-entering the ring with Pacquiao would probably top that.

Is He Doing it For the Glory?

Floyd Jr. seems to thrive on attention, so this is equally possible. He has never been defeated in the ring, and his winning streak is now 50-0. As long as he can keep that up, people will continue to watch him “come out of retirement” to see if the next fight is the one that he finally loses. And if he wins, he’ll be lauded even more.
